RE: THE GLOBAL BUSINESS ROUNDTABLE MADAGASCAR, ANTANANARIVO LAUNCH – 12 AUGUST 2017
Greetings Your Excellency in the wonderful name of the Lord Jesus Christ.
On Wednesday the 12th of May 2017, GBR Madagascar was launched in Antananarivo at the Hotel IBIS Antananarivo – Salle FILAO. This auspicious Event was attended by the GBR Convener & his delegation which had amongst them the Head of Department of IT & Communications, Mr Thabang Nkosi and the Head of Department of GBR Future Leaders, Mr Thato Mashao who form part of the GBR Secretariat team at the GBR Head Office in South Africa.
The Convenor and the secretariat were warmly received by the GBR Madagascar launch facilitation team, Mr Francis Adja and his local team led by Ms Tanya Ratsirahonanana at the Seranam-piaramanidin' Ivato International Airport. On the same afternoon of their arrival, the team met with the Ambassador of South Africa, Ms Maud Dlomo at the Ibis Hotel who warmly welcomed the Team and she gave the team a brief overview of the Island.
BRIEF OVERVIEW OF MADAGASCAR
The Island is situated off the southeast coast of Africa and is the fourth largest island in the world in space after some of the bigger Islands like Australia. Having developed in isolation, the island nation is famed for its unique wildlife. Traditionally, the Malagasy economy has been based on the cultivation of paddy rice, coffee, vanilla and cloves. But despite a wealth of natural resources and a tourism industry driven by its unique environment, the country remains one of the world's poorest and heavily dependent on foreign aid.
Since gaining independence from France in 1960, Madagascar has experienced repeated political instability, including coups, violent unrest and disputed elections.
The most recent coup in 2009 led to five years of political deadlock, international condemnation and economic sanctions. Despite the return of democratic elections in 2013, the political situation remains fragile. The Island has a lot of young business people and entrepreneurs who run very successful businesses.
The Ambassador assured the Team that she will assist GBR in Madagascar and support all its activities and will share her networks with the local Interim Leadership Team in Madagascar to ensure success of the organisation in Madagascar. The Ambassador will work closely with the Future Leaders in Madagascar and will assist with the launch of the first 5 Universities in the country. She has worked a lot with Universities on different projects.
